TikTok Creators Share Goodbye Videos Ahead of Potential U.S. Ban
TikTok Creators Share Heartfelt Goodbyes as U.S. Ban Looms
As the potential disappearance of TikTok in the U.S. draws closer, creators on the platform are bidding emotional farewells to their fans. Over the past week, many have posted videos expressing gratitude for the community they've built.
Kimberly Rhoades, known for her humorous content, told her 3 million followers, “I never in a million years thought anyone would care about what I say. If this app goes away, it was a beautiful ride.” In a follow-up video, Rhoades hummed “Taps,” concluding, “It was an honor making you laugh.”
The Supreme Court recently upheld a law requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform or face a U.S. ban. Congress passed the law, citing national security concerns related to TikTok’s data practices. If no resolution is reached, TikTok could disappear from app stores as soon as Sunday.
President-elect Donald Trump, who originally supported a TikTok ban, has since expressed interest in finding a solution. On Truth Social, he assured followers he would review the matter soon. TikTok CEO Shou Chew has also voiced optimism, thanking Trump for his willingness to work toward a resolution.
In the meantime, creators are urging fans to follow them on other platforms, such as YouTube and Instagram, while others are exploring alternatives like the TikTok-like app, RedNote. Influencers like Megan Cruz have used their farewell videos to reflect on the platform's unique culture, highlighting how it empowered users to lead conversations and create viral moments.
Despite fierce competition from Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts, TikTok remains a hub for creators, boasting 8.5 million U.S. users with over 1,000 followers. However, the app's future hangs in the balance as ByteDance faces pressure to sell. Businessman Frank McCourt’s group, Project Liberty, has emerged as a potential buyer, proposing a deal that could meet legal criteria.
For many creators, TikTok’s possible shutdown marks the end of an era. Some, like Jack Ryan, have encouraged fans to consider taking a break from social media entirely. Others, including Jonas Gindin, have shared their gratitude for the opportunities the platform provided.
“If we’re cooked, it’s been a ride,” Gindin said. “Every positive comment has meant the world.”
